Investing in our Schools

Every child deserves the chance to learn in a safe environment that gives them the opportunity to thrive and to reach their potential.

Strong public schools are fundamental to our communities and our economy. Maryland must provide our schools with the resources they need while making sure those dollars are reaching classrooms and improving outcomes for students. That includes strong academic programs, special education, career and technical education, and pathways that prepare students for college or a career.

Recruiting and retaining excellent educators is essential. Teachers deserve fair compensation, manageable workloads, and the resources to do their jobs well. We need to address teacher shortages and burnout so educators can focus on what matters most: helping every student succeed.

Students and educators also deserve safe, modern schools where they can focus on learning. I have led legislation to strengthen how schools respond to allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct, worked to improve protections for children, and backed phone-free school policies to reduce classroom distractions. Addressing aging facilities and overcrowding must also remain a priority.

Education begins well before kindergarten. Expanding access to high-quality prekindergarten and affordable childcare gives children a stronger start while helping parents remain in the workforce. Maryland has made significant investments in both, and I will continue working to make these opportunities accessible to more families.

Every child deserves an excellent education, regardless of their ZIP code or family income. I will continue fighting for strong schools, excellent teachers, safe classrooms, and the opportunities every student needs to succeed.
