Maryland State Senator District 33

Dawn D. Gile is an independently-minded legislator who serves as the state senator for Maryland’s 33rd District, representing more than 130,000 residents. She was elected to the Senate in 2022. In 2023, she was selected to serve on the Senate Finance Committee, which considers legislation relating to banks and other financial institutions, the insurance industry, health and welfare matters, labor and employment, and alcoholic beverages and cannabis.

An accomplished attorney, Dawn is also a nonprofit leader and an award-winning military family advocate. In her nonprofit leadership roles, she worked with stakeholders and policymakers at the state and federal levels to fight for working families. As an attorney, she represents businesses of all sizes, including local businesses right here in Maryland.

Dawn believes in providing a voice to each and every person in our community. She decided to run for office after seeing a need for more effective representation on four key values: supporting working families; protecting the environment, especially the Chesapeake Bay; investing in our schools; and helping small businesses thrive.

Dawn served as president of Military Spouse JD Network, an organization dedicated to serving the military and veteran community by expanding employment opportunities for military spouses and providing pro bono legal services for Gold Star families, veteran caregivers, and veteran entrepreneurs. She also served as secretary of Vigilant Torch Association and Foundation, an organization that provides emergency relief assistance and scholarships for veterans and military families. In addition to her nonprofit leadership, Dawn serves on the board of trustees for Rockford University. In that capacity, Dawn is involved in strategic planning and financial oversight for the university as well as establishing policies related to academic programs and student services.

Dawn obtained her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Rockford University and her juris doctor degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Following a rigorous application process, Dawn’s leadership and potential for public office were recognized with selection for the LBJ Women’s Campaign School at the University of Texas at Austin, a program dedicated to training more women to run for public office.

As a long-time resident of Maryland, Dawn is dedicated to the community where she and her husband have made their home. Dawn and her husband can regularly be found in their neighborhood, spearheading family events and other community engagement activities. Dawn is also active in her local public school PTA, having served on the PTA advocacy committee.

Dawn is the proud spouse of an Army soldier with over 24 years of active duty service. She developed a full-time legal career and cared for their children while her husband was frequently away on overseas deployments and military assignments. She brings steadfast dedication, empathy, and resilience to every challenge she takes on. As a mother to three girls, Dawn is passionate about affordable, quality childcare as well as issues affecting women and families. Dawn and her family love to spend time in their community, and she often remarks how fortunate her children are to have such a wonderful childhood, filled with many happy days swimming in the Severn River.
